Polarization can be understood as the divergence of attitudes away from the center, toward ideological extremes. While disagreement and debate can be healthy and productive, dehumanizing and delegitimizing those who disagree with us robs us of our ability to work together to solve important challenges. This divisiveness erodes democracy and can even result in hostility and violence. What values can be lifted up to help us all take steps to bridge this divide?
